Course Summary

Project Management in Smart Cities is a course that provides hands-on experience to students interested in public policy, planning, administration, and so on. This course is organised into two parts - (i) introduction to smart cities; (ii) how to manage the resources in smart cities. During the first half of the semester, the course offers a detailed introduction to smart cities design and development, wherein students need to compare different smart city cases across the world. In the second phase, students learn how to manage the resources in smart cities. At the end of the course, students will gain insights into various on-going initiatives under the umbrella of smart cities, understand the process of service provision in smart cities, and perform hands-on exercises to map the end user needs with potential solution features.

According to an ABI Research and an article published by Smart Cities Council India, the smart cities technology is a US$8.1 billion market today and in five years, the market will grow to almost five times its size, reaching US$39.5 billion.

The objective of the course is to familiarise students with the basic knowledge of smart cities and learn how to plan, analyse, implement and compare existing smart cities; gain a deep understanding of smart city design and development; learn about state-of-the-art strategies for smart cities; and understand potential applications of smart cities within the context of management of smart transportation systems, smart building, smart healthcare, smart government, smart energy and water.
