Course Summary

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is well established as one of the main manufacturing methods in the industry. Its application is moving from the traditional rapid prototyping world to the manufacturing of end-use parts. Part designers should have deep understanding of AM technologies, commercially available 3D printers and their capabilities and limitations, feasible materials and grades, and design for Additive Manufacturing guidelines. Designers need to design the part with the least amount of material using advanced design methods like topology optimisation, lattice design and generative design. After the design process, the best possible orientation for 3D printing and part nesting strategy is to build economic needs. There is nothing like applying the learning to use through a pilot project and in this course every learner needs to design and manufacture a part using one of the AM technologies at the end of the course which gives them the experience of practical application.

According to a market research report published by MarketsAndMarkets Research Private Ltd., the 3D printing market is expected to reach US $32.78 billion by 2023.

This course makes students aware of the current manufacturing and Additive Manufacturing trends and its adoption in different industry segments like aerospace & defence, medical devices, automobile, oil & gas, retail, CPG and manufacturing engineering among others. This will help learners to understand different AM technologies, their capabilities and limitations, and enable them to design a part for Additive Manufacturing. Also, learners will have a first-hand experience in applying and validating the Design for Additive Manufacturing guidelines, AM Build Methods and Strategies and their impact on product cost and schedule and printing the part in a 3D printer.

Hands-On

1. Students/Institutions need to procure the following software required for industry assignment as well as for Part B summative assessment:

  1. a. Autodesk Fusion 360

2. The above mentioned hands-on configuration will be leveraged by the students to complete the industry assignment as well as to complete the Part B of the summative assessment.

In case the tools are not available at their college, students can use the following Open Source CAD tools like FreeCAD, SpaceClaim Educational Licence or Blender (mainly for display parts, cartoon characters and more). For Additive Manufacturing Build Methods, students can leverage open source tools like Ultimaker Cura (CAM), Slic3r (CAM) or DeskArtes 3D.
