LAUNCH BEBRAS CHALLENGE 2020

About Bebras India Computational Thinking Challenge 2020

Organised by ACM India's CSpathshala initiative (https://cspathshala.org/), ACM India/CSpathshala's goal is to encourage every child in India learn about Computational Thinking.

Bebras (https://www.bebras.org/) is an international Computational Thinking Challenge organised in over 60 countries and designed to get students all over the world excited about computing. The Bebras challenges are made of a set of short problems called Bebras tasks. The tasks are fun, engaging and based on problems that Computer Scientists enjoy solving. The tasks require logical thinking and can be solved without prior knowledge of computational thinking. The aim is to solve as many as you can in the allotted time. The challenge is a great way to learn about computational thinking and problem solving skills. And the best part? It’s free!

What is Computational Thinking?

Computational Thinking (CT) is the process of formulating a problem, finding a solution to the problem and expressing it in such a way that humans or machines can understand the solution. It involves the use of problem-solving methods to decompose the problem into smaller manageable subproblems, identifying the right abstractions so as to deal with scale and complexity, finding existing patterns or models that can be adapted, building an algorithm to solve the problem and in case of multiple solutions; analysing the solutions on multiple parameters to identify the one that best meets the given situation.

The primary goal of teaching CT is to develop the ability to solve problems. Experts feel that this does not require the use of computers and can be taught as a series of interesting, engaging and fun activities. This avoids confusing computer science with programming or learning application software, makes the activities available to those children who do not have access to computers, and overcomes the hurdle of having to learn to program before being able to explore ideas and articulating solutions as algorithms. Students soon realise that they are capable of finding solutions to problems on their own, rather than being given a solution to apply to the problem. For example, children can play the game of Tic-Tac-Toe and then develop the rules of the game and winning strategies from their observation.

The Digital Process for Challenge 2020

Step 1

School nominates a coordinator. The coordinator registers using the "REGISTER YOUR SCHOOL" button.

Note:

After successful registration, you will receive a confirmation email on the Principal’s, as well as the coordinator’s email IDs. The email will contain the following:

  • 1. School login ID and password
  • 2. Instructions to proceed further
  • 3. Template to capture student/participant information

Step 2

School coordinator to sign into the school login form and upload the duly filled student data template. This template will capture the following information about each student/participant:

  • 1. Full Name
  • 2. Class
  • 3. Section
  • 4. Gender

Note:

On successful submission of the student data, within 24 hours, an email with the following 'participation details' will be sent to the school's registered email ID:

  • 1. The updated template containing the newly created student login IDs and passwords
  • 2. URL for student login
  • 3. Instructions to proceed further
  • 4. Recommended message to students

Step 3

School coordinator to share the 'participation details' with the respective students.

Note:

School coordinator may use the recommended message template to share the required participation details with the students.

Step 4

  1. Students to login with their respective student login ID and password, provided by the school coordinator.
  2. Proceed to participate in the challenge.

Step 5

To participate in the Bebras Challenge, students must access the competition module by clicking 'LAUNCH BEBRAS CHALLENGE 2020' button after logging in.

Note:

On this platform, the challenge will be conducted in the following groups and languages:

FAQs

1. As a school, how do my students participate? +
  • As a school teacher you can register as a coordinator during the school registration. You can register as many students as you want to and we will create login IDs for them. This will help us in collecting important data to send you an in-depth report on the results that includes ranks, aptitude and certificates.
